Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born into a musical household on August 9, 1963, in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel superstar Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and cousin of singing star Dionne Warwick. She began singing in the choir of her church The New Hope Baptist Church in Newark in the early years of her childhood and by the age of 15 was singing backing vocals professionally with her mother on Chaka Khans 1978 hit Im Every Woman. She provided backing vocals for Jermaine Jackson, Lou Rawls and her mom. Her work as the vocalist featured in New York funk group Material caught the eye of big record labels like Arista who she was signed in 1982, and continued to work with them for the rest of her career. The album helped her reach seven US chart-topping songs in succession. The album was sold to three million people in the first year as well as 25 million around the world.
